Dismal display leaves United on the brink of despair - 4/3/08

East Thurrock United (1) 2 - 1 (0) Hastings United
Cornhill 8, 90 Carey 74

A goal five minutes into added time condemned United to a desperate defeat in a simply shocking encounter at freezing Rookery Hill this evening, with United producing one of their worst displays of the season, when even a mediocre performance would have been enough to beat the most limited of opponents. Awful marking at an early free kick gifted the Rocks an eighth minute lead, but United looked almost clueless in their efforts to draw level before the interval, even after the hosts had lost their solitary attacking threat, experienced skipper Steve West, to injury. United did improve after the break, with young substitute Matt Maclean once again impressing, and Lee Carey eventually provided an equaliser direct from a twenty-five yard free kick with a little over a quarter of an hour remaining. Lee and Matt both went close as United then pressed for a winner, only to be caught on the break right at the death, and to be left facing up to the hideous prospect of a return to Division One South next season.

The full story is simply too awful to recount, but may be told in due course!
