Seventeen days after belatedly seeing in the New Year with a resounding victory over Tonbridge, United at last played their second game of 2010, the League Cup third round tie against Division One South side Croydon Athletic finally going ahead at the fourth time of asking. Croydon had been out of action for three weeks themselves, and the two sides' recent inactivity was evident in a generally low key encounter, which was settled by a superbly taken early goal from Croydon striker Gareth Williams, making his first appearance for the Rams. United, who handed starts to all three of their new signings, went closest to an equaliser when Sam Adams' lob was clawed off the line by Croydon's debutant keeper Nicky Morgan. The U's lacked a cutting edge on the whole though, despite playing plenty of decent passing football, and the visitors might have added to their tally on the break in the closing stages.
