Mark Stapley
First Team Assistant Manager

 

Returned to the Club in a coaching capacity ahead of the 2010/11 season, following a twelve month spell as assistant manager with County League neighbours Bexhill United, and stepped up to the assistant manager role at the start of November 2011. Was previously Reserve Team Manager at the Pilot Field during the 2008/09 and 2009/10 campaigns.

Giant shot stopper, who joined the Club in October 2011, shortly after leaving Premier Division rivals Horsham. Spent two seasons at League One side Exeter City from the start of the 2009/10 campaign, having been spotted playing for Newquay. Son of former United keeper Gerry Armstrong.

Rejoined the U's from Rye United in the build-up to the 2011/12 campaign, having previously spent the 2008/09 season at the Pilot Field, making his First Team debut at just seventeen. Started his senior career at Rye, and returned to The Salts after a year at Eastbourne Town, before switching back to United once more. A highly talented midfielder in his first spell at the Club, he looked to have made the right back berth his own second time around.

Teenage right back, who joined United's Youth Team ranks at the start of the 2011/12 season, and soon earned himself a senior debut in a League Cup second round tie at Sittingbourne.

First signed for United on a work experience deal from Peterborough United in November 2008, and returned to the Pilot Field on a permanent basis ahead of the 2009/10 campaign, after failing to win a full time contract with the Football League side. Tall central defender, who joined the then League One side on a YTS scholarship in October 2007, having previously played for Rye United in the County League. Also spent time on work experience with Lewes in the Conference during the 2008/09 season, and later enjoyed an ultimately unsuccessful trial period with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund. Became a permanent fixture in the First Team from February 2011 onwards, and ended the season by being voted the Supporters' Club Player of the Season.

Then manager Jason Hopkinson's first new signing for the Club in December 2010. A central defender or full back, who was a product of the Lewes Academy set-up, before making his senior debut for the Rooks in October 2009. Joined Aveley on a dual registration basis in November 2010, but linked up with his former boss at the Pilot Field on a similar deal a month later.

Inspirational and uncompromising central defender, who first joined United from Rye & Iden in August 2004. Had also previously played for St Leonards, and signed for Ashford Town after his controversial release from the Pilot Field in November 2007, before returning ahead of the 2009/10 campaign. Won the Supporters' Club vote for the 2004/05 Player of the Season and was Club captain from the start of the 2005/06 season until his departure, before resuming the role in 2010, a season which ended with another Player of the Year award. Stepped into a player/manager role at the end of October 2011, following the departure of Jason Hopkinson.

Cemented a First Team place at the Dripping Pan during the 2009/10 campaign, but joined Aveley in November 2010 after losing his regular place. A versatile player, who prefers the left back role, but can occupy any number of defensive and midfield positions.

Specialist left back who started his career as a junior with Brighton & Hove Albion, and joined Lewes upon his release from the Seagulls. Unable to break into the senior side at the Dripping Pan, but did earn representative honours with the England Schoolboys in March 2009. Spent the 2009/10 season at Worthing, before moving on to Bognor Regis Town a year later, but decided to quit the Rocks at the end of October 2011, signing for United a couple of weeks later.

Creative central midfielder and dead ball specialist, who returned to the Pilot Field for a third spell in March 2011. First joined the Club in August 2006, after starting the season with Bognor Regis Town, folliowing his release from YTS forms with Brighton & Hove Albion. Left the U's after two seasons to join Horsham, only to return in February 2009, but then rejoined the West Sussex side at the start of the 2010/11 campaign, before switching to County League outfit East Grinstead Town in February.

A former professional with League One side Charlton Athletic, who first signed for the U's on a one month loan deal in December 2010, subsequently extended to a season long arrangement, although he was recalled to The Valley in March. Returned to the Pilot Field upon his release by the Addicks in December 2011 and scored his first goal for the Club in his first game back. A left sided midfielder by trade, who didn't make a senior appearance whilst at Charlton, but saw plenty of First Team action in loan spells with Blue Square South outfits Bromley, Thurrock and Welling United.

Returned to the Pilot Field on a dual registration basis from County League neighbours Bexhill United in December 2011, having last played for United in January 2008. Made his U's debut as a seventeen year old in October 2003, after an impressive start to the season in the Reserves. A right sided attacking midfielder, who was at Brighton as a junior, and who has also played for Rye United.

Returned to the Pilot Field for a second spell on a dual registration basis from Conference South side Welling United in October 2011. First joined the Club in October 2008, signing from Bognor Regis Town, having previously come through the junior and Reserve Team ranks at Eastbourne Borough. After leaving United first time around, went on to play for Histon, as well as spending time in the USA, before joining Welling at the start of the 2011/12 campaign.

Tall and skillful striker who returned to the Club from County League neighbours Westfield in November 2011. First moved to the Pilot Field early in the 2009/10 season, and quickly made a name for himself in the Reserves, earning a handful of First Team squad call-ups, and a deserved senior debut in a Sussex Senior Cup tie against Rye United in December 2009, but left at the end of the campaign when United disbanded their second team.

A former Turkish Under 19 international, the striker played his junior football for Charlton Athletic and went on to make three senior appearances at The Valley, scoring on his full debut in October 2009. Signed a one year professional contract for the 2010/11 season, but was subsequently released, having also spent time on loan at Staines, Woking, Thurrock and Aveley.

Experienced and well travelled striker, who joined the Club from Division One South strugglers Walton & Hersham in October 2011. Played his Youth football for Millwall, and has had two spells at Lewes, also turning out for Havant & Waterlooville and Horsham, before dropping into County League circles with Chichester City United and Pease Pottage Village. Soon left the Club in early November after making only five appearances.

Creative attacking midfielder or striker, and dead ball specialist, who started his career as a junior with Lewes, where he graduated to the First Team as a seventeen year old. Moved to Eastbourne Borough for the 2010/11 season, and although unable to break into the First Team at Priory Lane, he was named Player of the Year for the Reserves after a successful Suburban League campaign. Subsequently left to join Burgess Hill Town in October 2011.

Talented central midfielder, who joined the U's from Premier Division rivals Billericay Town in December 2010. Started his career at Leyton Orient, where he earned his first professional contract in the summer of 2009, but was unable to break into the senior side. Initially moved to New Lodge on a one month loan deal that October, before making the switch a permanent one a couple of months later. Left to join fellow Premier Division outfit East Thurrock United in October 2011.

 

 

Adam Hinshelwood
First Team Assistant Manager

 

Joined the backroom staff in March 2011 to provide support in the lengthy, illness-enforced absence of Simon Balsdon. Started his playing career at Brighton & Hove Albion, for whom he made 100 appearances after signing his first professional contract in 2002. After suffering a serious knee injury in 2005, he spent the best part of four seasons on the sidelines, and eventually moved to Aldershot Town in the summer of 2009. He then signed for Wycombe Wanderers on New Year's Day 2010, before retiring from the game at the end of that season at the age of just twenty-six, and taking his first steps into football management. Left the Club in early September 2011 to take up the vacant manager's job at County League side Selsey.

Right sided midfielder, who joined the U's in March 2011 whilst on a break from university studies in Cardiff. Son of U's manager Jason, he started as a junior with Lewes, before breaking into the First Team at the Dripping Pan during the 2009/10 season, later earning himself a trial with Brighton & Hove Albion. Started the 2010/11 campaign with four more appearances for Lewes, before leaving for Wales, and returned to play three times for Eastbourne Town early in the New Year, but spent much of the year playing at Hereford based side Westfields in the Midland Football Alliance. Subsequently released by the Club at the end of December 2011, joining Eastbourne Town.

 

 


Jason Hopkinson
First Team Manager


Joined the U's as First Team Manager in December 2010 from Conference South side Lewes, where he was assistant manager to Steve Ibbitson between March 2009 and October 2010. Before, during and after that period, he also played a prominent role in Lewes' highly successful Under 18 Academy set-up, and was instrumental in helping several players to move through the junior ranks at the Dripping Pan and into the senior side, gaining a reputation as an inspirational coach. In addition, he is a Youth & Schoolboy Representative for Brighton & Hove Albion, and manages the Seagulls' Under 15 side. Left the Club after the FA Trophy draw at Bedfont Town in October 2011.

Diminutive right sided midfielder, who arrived at the Pilot Field from Lewes ahead of the 2011/12 season. A former junior at the Dripping Pan, he made his Rooks' debut as a sixteen year in a Sussex Senior Cup tie against the U's. Subsequently left the Club by mutual consent in October 2011.

Highly rated young striker, signed on a dual registration basis from Eastbourne Borough at the start of December 2011. Made his way through the Youth set-up and Reserve Team at Priory Lane, breaking into the senior side in the early stages of the 2011/12 campaign. Spent a successful period with County League outfit Redhill before moving to the Pilot Field. Returned to his parent club before the end of 2011.

Highly accomplished and experienced striker, who first played for the U's as a teenage Reserve in the late 1990s, having already made a senior debut with then neighbours St Leonards. Went on to enjoy success for several clubs in County League circles, including Eastbourne Town and Wealden, before stepping up to the Ryman League with the likes of Crowborough Athletic and Burgess Hill Town. More recently instrumental in Whitehawk's County League title winning campaign, and subsequent fine first season at Ryman level. Left the Club in early September to join County League neighbours Rye United.

Strong and tough tackling central midfielder, who became United's first new signing ahead of the 2011/12 campaign when agreeing to switch from Lewes. Started his career in the Youth ranks at the Dripping Pan, before earning a First Team debut in 2009, but missed the entire 2010/11 season after suffering a knee ligament injury. Subsequently left the Club in October, eventually rejoining Lewes.

Central defender and former Club captain who started his career at Eastbourne Borough, before moving to Rye & Iden United for the 2004/05 season. Signed for United in July 2005 and established himself as a First Team regular from the start of the following campaign. A series of quietly consistent performances saw him named joint Supporters' Club player of the year for 2007/08, and after resisting a move to Ashford Town that summer, he remained at the Pilot Field, finally breaking his goalscoring duck at the 143rd attempt. Moved to Eastbourne Town on a four week deal in January 2010 in a quest for regular First Team action, and joined Sidley United on a dual registration basis shortly after his return to the U's at the end of February. Re-signed for the U's ahead of the 2010/11 campaign on a dual registration basis with Rye United, but featured only twice that season, before taking a break from the game. Left the Club once again in early October 2011.
