Match Reports
Hastings United Colts 1-1 Hastings United
30/10/11 - United returned to league action with a fixture against their Colts counterparts at Sandhurst today. Somewhat bizarrely, the kick off was delayed by the non-appearance of the referee, but two willing volunteers were found to share the officiating duties, allowing the contest to belatedly get underway.
Neither goalkeeper was unduly troubled in the early stages, with the bulk of the play focused on the midfield area, and a series of long range efforts missing the target.
A competitive encounter at last saw a goal when Olly Carter's right wing cross was knocked down by Luke Minihane for Ryan Jinks to slot home to give United the lead, which they retained at the interval thanks to a superb one handed save by keeper Martin Jones.
There were chances aplenty at the start of the second period, but United continued to hold their slender advantage until a misplaced clearance by Jones was seized upon by a Colts player, whose shot took a thick deflection off Jack Woodward and left Jones rooted to the spot as it sailed past him to level the scores.
Gio Bacor's through ball gave Carter the chance to restore United's lead, the striker just beating the Colts' keeper to the ball, only to see his brave header rebound off the post. At the other end, a goalline clearance by Mason Finch denied the Colts a late winner, but a draw felt like a fair result, with the game as a whole providing a great advert for Youth football at the Club.
Line-up: Martin Jones, Callum Fisher, Joseph Long, Jack Woodward, Liam Cookson, Scott Firth, Lewis Hutchinson, Ryan Jinks, Luke Minihane, Olly Carter, Gio Bacor, Mason Finch, Eddie Girvan, Aaron Jay.
Woodchurch Wanderers 3-4 Hastings United
16/10/11 - For their first away match of the season, United travelled to a strong Woodchurch team, who had thrashed them 12-0 in a League Cup tie last season, when the U's were even in a higher division. The day didn't start well for the visitors, three players withdrawing from the squad due to injury, leaving them with only eleven fit players for the match.
Despite this, United were quickly off the mark, Luke Minihane latching onto a Ryan Jinks pass, and breaking into the left hand side of the penalty area, before coolly slotting past the keeper. And just five minutes later, the lead was doubled, Aaron Jay finding himself alone in the area and beating the keeper with ease from close range.
Woodchurch were stung into action, mounting attack after attack, but the United defence held strong until an attempted clearance took an unkind ricochet into the path of a home player, who slotted into the corner. Not long after, the scores were level, when Eddie Girvan mistimed a tackle in the area to concede a penalty, that was squeezed past the unfortunate Martin Jones, making the half time score 2-2.
The second half started with chances at both ends, but a misunderstanding between Jones and centre half Liam Cookson soon allowed Woodchurch to complete their comeback.
Not to be outdone, United started to push for an equaliser, and from a Gio Bacor corner, Scott Firth headed home from close range. Duly inspired, the U's went all out for a winner, Jinks hitting the crossbar after a neat exchange of passes with Minihane.
And with just fifteen minutes remaining, another United corner was only partially cleared to the edge of the area, where Aaron Jay struck a beautiful shot that flew into the top left corner past the keeper's despairing dive.
That was the cue for wild celebrations amongst the U's contingent, and they held out for a fantastic victory by the odd goal in seven. Bacor was awarded the Man of the Match honours, for his energy on the left wing in both attack and defence.
Line-up: Martin Jones, Callum Fisher, Joseph Long, Liam Cookson, Jack Woodward, Scott Firth, Aaron Jay, Gio Bacor, Eddie Girvan, Luke Minihane, Ryan Jinks.
Hastings United 5-0 Ridgewaye
9/10/11 - Following their fine opening to the league season, United played host to a Ridgewaye side who had beaten them twice on their way to the B Division title last season.
Both teams produced some decent football in the early stages on William Parker Sports College's Athletics Stadium pitch, but it was United that took the lead, when Olly Carter broke through the visitors' defence and planted a low shot past the keeper.
Luke Minihane then turned sharply on the edge of the area and fired a shot into the bottom left hand corner to double the U's advantage, before Gio Bacor, who tormented the Ridgewaye defence with his wing play throughout the contest, latched onto a pass from Ryan Jinks and slotted home to make it 3-0 at half time.
A spell of Ridgewaye pressure early in the second period was repelled by some strong United defending and the home side went on to extend their lead, Bacor claiming his second goal of the game midway through the half.
A late Bacor corner set up the U's fifth, Carter beating the keeper to the ball and heading in one of the easiest goals that he is ever likely to score, claiming his second of the day, rounding off a tremendous performance by the U's, and earning the man of the match honours as well.
Line-up: Martin Jones, Callum Fisher, Dion Pearce, Jack Woodward, Liam Cookson, Scott Firth, Lewis Hutchinson, Gio Bacor, Ryan Jinks, Olly Carter, Luke Minihane, Aaron Jay, Tommy Craig, Joseph Long.
Hastings United 6-0 Tonbridge Junior
2/10/11 - United started their 2011/12 league campaign on a sweltering afternoon at William Parker Sports College today. Preparations did not start well, with striker Olly Carter splitting his boots, and having to make a dash to the town to buy a replacement pair, only making it back to the ground a few minutes before kick off.
The two teams both started brightly enough, with much of the action focussed on the middle of the park. Each team played some fluent football in the search for a breakthrough, which finally arrived when Luke Minihane opened the scoring for United with a crisp shot.
Tonbridge took up the challenge, forcing keeper Martin Jones into one fine save, but ten minutes before half time, Ryan Jinks latched onto a delightfully measured pass by Aaron Jay, and slotted past the visiting keeper to double United's lead at the interval.
The U's emerged for the second half full of running and took little time to extend their lead, Carter finishing off a fine passing move by firing into the corner. United then moved up a gear, adding further goals from Gio Bacor, Lewis Hutchinson and a second from Ryan Jinks, to wrap up a comfortable win.
Line-up: Martin Jones, Callum Fisher, Liam Cookson, Jack Woodward, Joseph Long, Scott Firth, Dion Pearce, Ryan Jinks, Lewis Hutchinson, Olly Carter, Gio Bacor, Aaron Jay, Luke Minihane.
